India unites or Bollywood?

Mile Sur Mera Tumhara is one song that makes my flesh fill with goosebumps even now when i hear it.If u visit my orkut account u will see its one of the earliest videos i added.Created in 1988 the song speaks of unity of India.Featuring eminent personalities from all walks of life(both regional and national),it kindled a spirit and sense of patriotism in me as a child.

22 years later Zoom,Times of India and vodafone took the initiative to remake the old experience. Quite a dream i must say🙂 I was excited, looking forward to watching my present day icons playing the patriotic part.
Today when i switched my TV on to see the video….boy i was so disappointed!Technology has reached such heights yet the video seemed so artificial! The whole saga seemed a collaborative production of YrF-DHarma productions! Its a celebration of unity of Bollywood…with a few musicians n regional stars strewn here n there😦
The most neglected were the sports stars with just their faces featured towards the end.Even the beautiful locales of the Indian states were frgotten. The major focus seemed to be on just Bollywood.
The lead singers Sonu Nigam,Shaan and Sunidhi(with due respect to them) were pathetically aweful. Why did they have to sing in languages which they could not even pronounce well? Shreya Ghoshal,A magnificent singer herself gets sidelined in the exrecise just lending her voice to Ash.
The video starts with Rahman on his fingerboard.I think He is the saving grace for this whole farce! Stalwarts like Amjad Ali Khan,Zakir Hussain et al played thier parts quite well.SHivamani was mesmerising. But Rashid Khan stretched a bit while doing his classical recital.
The real setback was conspicuous absence of Lata MaAngeshkar.I hoped the video would end with her.But no!!! the curtains closed with a silly rendition of Jaya He…
If i were to tweet my emotions i would say : Louis Banks #epicfail.
That sums up my reveiw.
WIsh this project was entrusted to Bharat Bala(of Vande Mataram fame)
My rating 2 out of 5 and a big thumbs down to Fir Miley Sur. The older version was way better!!!

I always believe that no-body can re-create the original thing/magic. It's not that we dont have technology or any effects or sound ..etc. Point is the IDEA and you cant/NEVER re-create any idea.

  6. i think u sud have included a few more plusses…shobhana, shiamak davar were good, so was the marathi and punjabi (gurdaas maan)'s sequence. but the soul was missing…the original one showed india at its best..with its greenary, wild life, and yet technologies…metro etc…this one shows only starts in front of insignificant backdrops…n also the video seemed to be a bad publicity of juma masjid!!!one sequence that pissed me off..apart from shaan and sunidhi singing the bengali portion(none of them have even near decent bengali diction), it showed shaan praising bengal in front of mumbai's taj bengal!!!

  7. who told the makers that the genext likes everything in a hip hop manner??? i wud have been much more happier without seeing a deepika in a miniskirt, lipsyncing to such an eternal song…and speaking of stars..if they had to include stars…y not madhuri, sridevi, rekha? y deepika and shahid???!!!! hallo!! its supposed to be patriotic, not seductive!!!

  8. @ stephen. India always knew the bollywood actors the best…yet the old video showed very few in a balanced matter…it showed the cultural richness of india..not the box office richness!!!

  9. it was so funny! bengal= howrah bridge. inspite of being a kolkatan, i really do not agree with kolkata being the face of bengal…there's the wonderful artifacts of bankura, the history of murshidabad, the beautiful hills and jungles of north bengal…y only howrah bridge!!???
