The Must-Visit Durga Pujo Pandals in Kolkata
The annual calendar of Bengalis can be broadly classified into two parts: CP and DP – Countdown to Pujo and Durga Pujo. With Maa Durga’s Akaal Bodhon slated for today evening, Pujo has FINALLY arrived. The excitement is palpable in the air (as much as in the sluggish traffic on the roads). Kolkata has decked up like a newly-wed bride, with lights and colours everywhere. The huge turnout at pandals from Dwitiya itself gives an idea of how grand this year’s Pujo will be.
If you have not yet made plans for your pandal hopping, I am here to help. Here is a list of Durga Pujos that you MUST VISIT:
Having lived in Kasba for the last twelve years, Durga Pujo for me has become synonymous with Bosepukur Sitala Mandir and Talbagan. They are a must-watch on every pandal hopper’s list. Close on the heels in Rajdanga Naba Uday Sangha.
My Pujo Parikrama every years starts with Ekdalia Evergreen and Singhi Park in Gariahat. Hindustan Park (and Hindustan Club on the other side of the road) is also showing its mettle in the battle of Pujos.
When you are in this part of the town, how can you miss Tridhara Sammilani, Ballygunge and Samaj Sebi? Once done, visit Desopriyo Park and then move on to Badamtala Ashar Sangha and 66 Pally. Hop over to Mudiali and Shib Mandir next.
Start with Babubagan in Dhakuria. Move on to Selimpur Pally, and then 95 Pally and Jodhpur Park Sarbojonin. You can next visit Santoshpur Lake Pally. Head towards Naktala Udayan Sangha and 41 Pally. From Haridevpur, go to Behala for Behala Nutan Dal and Barisha Club. Visit Suruchi Sangha and Chetla Agrani and you are done for the day.
Durga Pujo is incomplete with a visit to Baghbazar Sarbojonin. In this age of theme Pujos, the Sabeki Pujo here still draws millions. You can then walk towards Kumortuli Park Sarbojonin from here. Ahiritola Sarbojonin is also close by. Head towards Chaltabagan (near Maniktala) and proceed to College Square and Md Ali Park. There are some more great Pujos in north Kolkata – Kashi Bose Lane, Nalin Sarkar Street, Sikdar Bagan.
Telangabagan Sarbojonin near Ultadanga is a top draw among pandal hoppers. Close on the heels in Kankurgachi Mitali Sangha. But these cannot match the scale of Sreebhumi Sporting Club, which is among the grandest Pujos in this part of the town. You should not miss the pandals at Lake Town Adhibasi Brinda, Dumdum Park Tarun Sangha and Bharat Chakra either.
Happy Pujo! Happy Pandal Hopping!!!
