Book Review: Return of the Trojan Horse – Tales of Criminal Investigation by Amit Dubey

It is indeed ironic and interesting that as I sat down to pen my thoughts down on this book, WhatsApp messenger faced a global outage, thus sending users like me, across the world, into a frenzy. An event like this makes us realise how entwined technology has become with our lives. We cannot imagine even moments without our ‘smart’ phones or other cool gadgets.

In this digital age, the dark world of crime also hinges on state-of-the-art technology; cyber crime is a menace that governments are slowly grasping the concepts about. Technology also plays a crucial role in solving crimes, as the author Amit Dubey, has shown in this book ‘Return of the Trojan Horse – Tales of Criminal Investigation’.

The book is essentially a collection of three short stories (or cases) which the protagonist helps the police solve, with his expertise in the field of cyber security. The first case deals with a terrorist attack; the second one is regarding a kidnapping case while the last one revolves around hit and run case. Narrated in the first person, the writing is plain and simple.

Without sounding preachy, the author takes you through the nitty-gritties of a criminal investigation using technology. The minimal use of jargons makes the book even more pleasing. The free-flowing writing will compel you to stay up until you read the last word.

Reading this book makes one realise how invasive technology has become. At a time when data privacy is hotly contested in courts, this book holds up the mirror to the society. Technology is like a genie in a bottle – it can bring with it boons, or can be a bane for those who misuse it.

I sincerely hope the author write more books in future, may be sci-fi thrillers – there is a lot of promise in his writing. They say truth is stranger than fiction, and ‘Return of the Trojan Horse – Tales of Criminal Investigation’ surely accounts for some thrills from real life.

My Rating: 3/5 stars

P.S. I received a review copy of the book from Leadstart Publishing
