After posting my entry on the Malnutrition problem and the #BlogToFeedAChild initiative by Blogadda, I was requested by them to post another entry. I gleefully agreed; anything to ensure the future citizens of India have at least the luxury of one filling meal a day.
India is a Nation that has reached Mars, but still grapples with the problem of food security. With almost one-third of the world’s malnourished kids, and bitter political bickering over an essential human right – the Right to Food – world’s fastest growing economy cuts a sorry figure.
While the present situation in the country is scary, the future looks no brighter. The social sector spending of the Union Government is decreasing every year. While defence budget sees a fat growth, education hardly gets its due share. Add to that, Centre-State spats on funds for mid-day meals.
One of the flagship schemes of the Government of India – Sarva Siksha Abhiyaan has been able to bring back the kids to school. The mid-day meal scheme has ensured dropout rates come down. Several loopholes remain in the implementation, but at least the kids are getting one square meal.
But then again, Right to Food or Food Security is not enough. It is essential to make sure that the meals provided have the requisite nutrient quotient. We must not forget one in four among the world’s malnourished children belongs to India.
As a citizen of India, it is the duty and responsibility of each one of us to ensure that the poor kid on the street does not go hungry as we happily munch on the overpriced burgers at a coffee shop. I thank Blogadda for this noble initiative of sponsoring the mid-day meal for one child for every blog post written on this topic.
Akshayapatra Foundation is doing a great job of feeding children across several States. Hope their reach soon spreads across all provinces and Union Territories of India.
Every child that goes to sleep on an empty stomach, every mother that sacrifices her meal to feed her child bust the myth of a shining, vibrant India. The system needs a overhaul. The change can come through your participation.
I am going to #BlogToFeedAChild with Akshaya Patra and BlogAdda
